Mortlach Distillery
Founded by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alex Gordon in 1823, Mortlach was the first legal distillery in Dufftown following the passing of the Excise Act. It remained as the only distillery in Dufftown until Glenfiddich was founded in 1887 by William Grant It was Alexander Cowie, who pioneered the distillery’s famed technique of ‘2.81 times distillation’, rather than the traditional method of double distillation, which is still in practice today: resulting in a spirit full of character and power.
NOSE
Dessert in a glass. Stewed plums with thick orange marmalade topped with spun brown sugar. Dark chocolate gateaux joins morello cherries steeped in syrup. Hazelnut praline complements notes of vanilla.
TASTE
Luxurious black currant coulis layered over stewed rhubarb with flavours of delicately malted chocolate. In time, freshly roasted coffee beans and soft wood tannins offer richer undertones.
FINISH
Refined and lingering. Hints of aged leather with a gentle nutty edge slowly fade to mature oak nuances.
