The origin of this variety is Greek (its name comes from combination of the Latin and Greek words for black: ""niger"" and ""mavros"") and is grown mainly in the provinces of Brindisi and Lecce. This variety is perfectly suited to Salento’s clay and limestone soils, and when its abundant clustering is limited by pruning, it expresses itself as rich structured wines with intense aromas and notes of red fruits, tobacco, Mediterranean vegetation and medicinal herbs, the latter responsible for the delicately bitter aftertaste typical of the variety.
